Signs You May Need a New Condenser Fan Motor

The condenser fan motor spins the fan blade on your outdoor AC unit, pulling air across the condenser coils to release heat. When it fails, your system can overheat quickly.

💨Outdoor Fan Won't Spin
  • The outdoor unit is running (you can hear the compressor) but the fan blades aren't turning.
  • Without the fan, heat can't escape and the compressor will overheat.
  • Check the capacitor first — a bad capacitor is the most common cause of a non-spinning fan.

Always test the capacitor before replacing the motor. A $15 capacitor could save you from buying a $150+ motor.

🔊Grinding, Squealing, or Screeching Noises
  • Loud grinding or metal-on-metal sounds from the outdoor unit.
  • Squealing on startup that gets worse over time.
  • These noises indicate worn bearings inside the motor.
🌡AC Blowing Warm Air / Reduced Cooling
  • Without proper airflow over the condenser coils, the system can't release heat.
  • Indoor air feels warmer than normal even though the system runs.
  • The compressor may cycle on high-pressure safety limits.
💨Fan Spins Slowly
  • Blades rotate sluggishly instead of at full speed.
  • Reduced airflow causes poor cooling performance.
  • Can be caused by a failing motor or a weak capacitor — test both.
🔥Burning Smell or Overheating
  • A hot, electrical burning odor coming from the outdoor unit.
  • The unit may shut down on a thermal overload safety switch.
  • A seized motor draws excessive current and overheats rapidly.
