Why didn't my condenser fan motor last?

9 times out of 10, a weak run cap drives the motor to fail. The cap loses MFD over time, the motor pulls higher amps, the bearings overheat. Replace the cap every 5-7 years and the motor lasts much longer.

How do I match HP, RPM, and frame size?

HP and RPM come off the data plate. Frame size (42Y/48Y) describes the mount dimensions — 42Y is the smaller frame, 48Y is larger. Shaft diameter is usually 1/2" but verify. Rotation (CW/CCW from shaft end) MUST match your existing setup. Bring the old motor in — we'll match every dimension at the counter.

What does '2-speed' mean on a condenser motor?

2-speed condenser motors have two RPM ranges (typically 850 and 1075). The control board chooses based on stage call. Useful for 2-stage condensers — won't help on a single-stage system.

How long does a condenser fan motor last in Dallas?

6-10 years typical. Open-frame motors exposed to rain, sprinkler overspray, and afternoon sun fail faster. Sun-side units typically die first.

2-speed condenser motors run low-speed on stage 1 cooling and high-speed on stage 2 — they need a properly-sized 2-speed cap and a board that supports both speed taps. Confirm the existing setup is genuinely 2-speed before swapping in a 2-speed motor; a single-speed system won't use the low-speed tap. Bring the old motor + cap in; we'll match the right combo at the counter.

Symptoms of failure

Outdoor fan will not spin at all
Fan spins slowly, or only starts if you nudge it
Loud grinding, humming or squealing from the outdoor unit
AC runs but the house will not cool down

If your AC fan isn’t spinning or spins slowly, the condenser fan motor is likely the problem. This 2-speed motor handles both 1/3 and 1/5 HP loads at 825 RPM. Thermal overload protection prevents burnout.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 3/5Typical time 30-45 minutes

Kill power at the outdoor disconnect and confirm 0V before touching anything.
Discharge the run capacitor. It holds a charge even with the power off.
Photograph the wiring and the fan blade height before you take anything apart.
Pull the fan blade off the shaft. The nut is often reverse-threaded.
Unbolt the motor from the fan grille, usually four bolts.
Match HP, RPM, frame, shaft diameter and rotation. RPM matters - 1075 and 825 are different jobs.
Mount the new motor, set the blade back to the same height, reconnect by wire color.
Replace the run capacitor at the same time. A weak cap is usually what killed the last motor.
