READ THIS BEFORE YOU CALL
This chart is a free reference tool, here for you to use on your own. Open To Public HVAC Parts is a walk-in parts counter in Dallas, Texas.
- In-store sales only — no shipping, no online orders.
- We cannot look up or cross parts over the phone or by email.
If you are local, bring the old part to 10226 Plano Rd, Suite 104, Dallas TX and we will test it and match it free at the counter.
Use this chart to find equivalent motor run capacitors across Titan HD (Packard), AmRad, Supco, MARS/JARD, Totaline (Carrier), TrueLine (Rheem/Ruud), Hartland Controls (Littelfuse), TradePro, and Goodman/Amana.
Quick rules: 440V can safely replace 370V (not vice versa). Round and oval are electrically identical if MFD and voltage match. Dual capacitors show Run/Fan (e.g., 35/5 = 35 MFD compressor + 5 MFD fan).
⚠ Safety first: Capacitors store a charge even with the power off. Before touching terminals, kill power at the disconnect AND discharge the capacitor — bridge the terminals with an insulated-handle screwdriver (or a 20kΩ resistor), then confirm 0V with a meter. Never handle a swollen or leaking capacitor by the terminals. Not sure? Bring it to the store — we test parts free.

Why there is no capacitor chart by model number or tonnage
No manufacturer publishes one. Not Goodman, not Carrier, not Rheem, not Trane, not Lennox. If you have been searching for a “Goodman capacitor chart,” a “Carrier AC capacitor size chart,” or a capacitor size by tonnage, that is why the charts you find disagree with each other — the manufacturers never published one, so somebody built it themselves.
The reason is simple. A run capacitor is sized to the motor, not to the system. Two condensers carrying the same model number and the same tonnage can leave the factory with different compressors or different fan motors, and the required microfarad rating follows the motor. Once a motor has been changed in the field — and on an older unit it usually has — the original number is wrong anyway.
There is no set size to tonnage. We will not guess at one, and a chart that does is guessing on your behalf.
What actually tells you the rating
- The old capacitor. The microfarad rating (µF or MFD) and the voltage are printed on the case. On a dual you will see two numbers — the larger one is the compressor, the smaller one is the fan. This is the answer. Match it.
- The unit’s rating plate. Many outdoor units list the required run capacitor on the data plate, or on the wiring diagram inside the electrical access panel.
- The motor nameplates. If the capacitor is swollen, burst, or the label has cooked off, the condenser fan motor nameplate gives the microfarad that motor needs.
- The OEM part number. If the old part still carries a manufacturer number, cross it in the OEM part number lookup further down this page.
One thing worth knowing before you meter the old one: a failing run capacitor usually reads low. You match the printed rating, not the reading off a dead part. Whatever it measures, replace it with what it says on the case.
Once you have the rating, any brand carrying that same rating will do the job — that is what the rest of this page is for. Start with telling the shapes apart, then go to the dual round, single round, or single oval tables.
Telling the shapes apart
Four things get called “an AC capacitor” and only two of the differences are electrical. These are photographs of stock on our own shelf — tap any of them for the full specification.
Dual, round80+7.5X440Three posts. One can serving both the compressor and the condenser fan. The two numbers are the two capacitances — here 80 for the compressor and 7.5 for the fan.
Single, round80/440Two posts. One motor, one value. A dual can be replaced by two singles of the matching values if there is room to mount them.
Single, oval7.5X440Same electrically as a round of the same value. Round versus oval is purely about what your bracket holds — it is a mounting question, not an electrical one.
Universal, multi-valueTURBO200XOne part covering a wide range by wiring to the tap you need. Useful when the label is gone, but it costs more than the single correct capacitor and a row of taps confuses people who did not know their value to begin with.
Hard start kitSPP6ENot a run capacitor. A start assist that drops out once the compressor is up to speed — it does not replace the run capacitor, it works alongside it.Single Round Motor Run Capacitors

Start Capacitors
Start capacitors play by different rules than run capacitors: the MFD rating is a range (e.g., 88–106), and your replacement’s range must cover the original’s — equal is ideal, up to about 20% higher is acceptable. Voltage must be equal or higher. Never substitute a start capacitor for a run capacitor or vice versa — they are different constructions (electrolytic vs. oil-filled film) doing different jobs.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I replace a 370V capacitor with a 440V?
Yes. The voltage rating is the maximum the capacitor can handle. A 440V works perfectly in place of a 370V with the same MFD. Never replace a 440V with a 370V.
Can I use a round capacitor instead of an oval?
Yes. Same MFD and voltage means electrically identical. Shape only affects mounting.
What do the two numbers on a dual capacitor mean?
The larger number is MFD for the compressor motor, the smaller for the condenser fan. A 35/5 provides 35 MFD to the compressor and 5 MFD to the fan. Terminals are labeled C (common), HERM (compressor), and FAN.
How do I know what MFD capacitor I need?
The required MFD is on the old capacitor label and unit data plate. Match it exactly.
Are all these brands interchangeable?
Yes, if MFD and voltage match. Any brand on the same row is a direct replacement.
Brand Part Number Decoder
Supco: CR = single, CD = dual. Number = MFD. X + voltage. R suffix = round.
TradePro: TP-CAP-[MFD]/[voltage] for single. TP-CAP-[MFD1]/[MFD2]/[voltage] for dual. R = round.
Hartland: CAP-[MFD]/[voltage]. R = round. All 370/440V.
Totaline: P291-[digits]. Last digit: 3=370V, 4=440V. RS=round, S=oval.
TrueLine: 43-TL[MFD][voltage]-R (round) or -V (oval). Last digit: 3=370V, 4=440V.
Goodman: CAP + [fan MFD×10] + [comp MFD×10] + voltage. Suffix varies.
Titan HD: PRC=single round, POC=single oval, PRCD/POCD=dual. F=440V.
OEM & Legacy Brand Decoder
The number on a failed capacitor is often an equipment maker’s part number, not one of the aftermarket brands above. Here’s how to read the most common ones:
NGM (found in Goodman/Amana/Janitrol): Duals start with 328P: next digits are compressor µF then fan µF, then voltage code (37 = 370V, 44 = 440V). Watch the fan codes: 7D means 7.5 µF and 1Z means 12.5 µF. Example: 328P4505H44 = 45+5 µF, 440V.
Goodman CAP numbers: CAP + fan µF×10 + compressor µF×10 + voltage: CAP050450440 = 45+5 µF, 440V. Older Janitrol B9457-xxxx numbers don’t decode — look them up or bring the cap in.
Aerovox (Z-series): Digits 2–3 = case size, digits 5–6 = voltage, digits 7–8 = MFD, then M = exact value, N = fractional, W = dual. Full decoder and case-size table in the Aerovox cross-reference section below.
GE / Genteq (97F, Z97F, 27L): These numbers don’t encode ratings — they’re catalog lookups. The rating is printed on the can. Note: 97F9895 is a 45+5 µF 370V (a common online error lists it as 440V — a 440V replacement works fine either way).
York / Source 1: S1-024-xxxxx-xxx numbers don’t decode, and the same part appears with and without the S1- prefix and dashes. Read the µF and voltage off the can, or bring it in.
Dayton (Grainger): Five-character stock numbers (2MDV6, 2MEK7…) are catalog lookups — the rating is on the label.
Philips / Sprague / old Mallory: Legacy brands from decades-old equipment. Skip the part number entirely — the printed µF + VAC on the can is the cross-reference. (Modern Mallory PSU start caps do decode: PSU + starting µF + voltage code, e.g., PSU8815 = 88–106 µF at 110/125V.)
CBB65 / CBB60 / CBB61: Not a brand — a Chinese construction code (CBB65 = metal-can run capacitor, CBB61 = the square fan capacitor). The real rating is printed right next to it, e.g., “45+5μF 450VAC”. A 450V import is fine to replace with a 440V-rated cap of the same µF.

Where these came from. The Lennox numbers are published by Lennox in their own parts catalog, including the AmRad cross where Lennox itself lists one. The Carrier/Totaline, ICP and Nordyne numbers are distributor-published — those manufacturers do not put a public capacitor list online, so we only printed rows we could corroborate against a named HVAC distributor.
Watch the order on ICP numbers. ICP, Heil, Tempstar and Comfortmaker descriptions list a dual capacitor small value first — their “5+40” is a 40/5, not a 5/40. We have written them in normal counter order above. And “Rn” in an ICP description means run, not round; the shape is the separate Rd or Ov token.
What we do not have. Bryant and Payne appear to share Carrier’s HC98 numbers — every listing we found gives one number for all three — but the ratings published against those HC98 numbers contradict each other, so we have left the series off rather than print one that might be wrong. We also found nothing citable for Armstrong, Ducane, Concord, Air-Ease, Day & Night, BDP, or the legacy Nordyne 6xxxxx series, and we are not going to invent them. If you have one of those in hand, the rating is printed on the part — use that.
Other free references we trust: AmRad Turbo 200 selector • Genteq GEM III catalog (97F/27L ratings) • Totaline P291 catalog • Mallory PSU start-cap chart. For anything they don’t cover, our counter system crosses thousands more.
These are the OEM numbers we get asked about most. Thousands more are in our counter system — bring any part number to our Dallas counter and we’ll cross it while you wait. Heads up: Trane D-numbers span every part type — if yours turns out to be a blower or condenser fan motor instead of a capacitor, use our motor cross-reference and its 116-number Trane D-number lookup table.
Aerovox Capacitor Cross-Reference Chart
Aerovox part numbers look like gibberish until you know they are a SuperMet code, and then they tell you everything — including the exact can size, which is the part that decides whether the replacement physically fits. If you have an Aerovox capacitor in your hand, decode it here and then match the MFD, voltage and can size against the tables above.
A correction we owe you. An earlier version of this page said Aerovox closed in 2018. That was wrong and we have taken it down. Aerovox Inc. filed Chapter 11 in 2001 and sold its US film-capacitor business to Parallax Power Components in 2002, but an operating Aerovox exists today in New Bedford, Massachusetts, with manufacturing in the US, China and India. What is true is that their public product line has moved toward industrial and medical film capacitors, and HVAC motor-run parts are no longer promoted — so most Aerovox cans coming across our counter are cross-referenced to a current brand.
How to read an Aerovox part number
The canonical form is Z 23 S 37 15 M 01 — series, case, impregnant, volts, MFD, rating character, descriptor.
← Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Position | Field | What the values mean |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Series | Z = SuperMet, metal can · M = AeroMet II, plastic case |
| 2–3 | Case style | The most useful field on the part. See the size table below. |
| 4 | Impregnant | S = SuperSoy soybean oil (Z series) · P = Supernol (M series). Mixes exist in the wild. |
| 5–6 | Voltage | First two digits of the VAC rating. 24=240 · 33=330 · 37=370 · 44=440 · 48=480 · 60=600 |
| 7–8 | Capacitance | MFD as two digits — 05=5, 15=15, 45=45, 80=80. Read together with the next field. |
| 9 | Rating character | M = value is exactly those two digits · N = odd or fractional value · W = dual |
| 10–11 | Descriptor | 00 single (M series) · 01 standard (Z series) · on M-series duals this is the second MFD value |
| 12 | Factory | N = Aerovox China · XX = Aerovox US. Only on later production. |
Aerovox case codes — round vs oval, and the size
Digits 2 and 3 tell you the can. This is what you actually need in order to know whether the replacement drops into the same bracket:
← Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Code | Can | Code | Can |
|---|---|---|---|
| 22 | 1½″ round | 50 | 1¼″ oval |
| 23 | 1¾″ round | 42 | 1½″ oval |
| 24 | 2″ round | 64 | 1¾″ oval |
| 26 | 2½″ round | 62 | 2″ oval |
On AeroMet II (M), the W is followed by the second value: M24P3725W10 is 25 + 10 MFD.
On SuperMet (Z), the MFD digits carry the total and the split is not encoded at all. Z24S3725W is listed by Aerovox for both 15 + 10 and 20 + 5. A Z-series dual part number does not tell you the split — you have to read the can label.

Older Aerovox numbers carry no code at all. All-numeric part numbers such as 1902017 predate the SuperMet system and cannot be decoded — read the MFD and voltage off the can face and match on those.
What you are replacing it with
Aerovox published their motor run capacitors at ±10% tolerance, −40 to +70°C, and 60,000 hours. That tolerance is looser than most of what is on the shelf today — Titan Pro, Titan HD and Supco are built to ±5%, Genteq and Totaline to ±6%. So crossing an Aerovox to a current brand at the same MFD and voltage is a tolerance upgrade, not a compromise. Match the MFD exactly, match or exceed the voltage, and match the can size from the code above.
Why two identical capacitors are not the same part
Every run capacitor from every major brand — Aerovox, Titan Pro, Titan HD, Genteq, Supco, AmRad, MARS, CDE — is self-healing metallized polypropylene film in an oil fill. The dielectric is not the differentiator. Neither is the shape, and neither is the number of spade terminals.
What actually differs is endurance class, and it is not printed anywhere a customer would look.

| Standard | Class | Rated life |
|---|---|---|
| EIA-456-A | Class E | 60,000 hours — tested 2,000 h at 125% rated voltage and 10°C above max rated temperature |
| IEC 60252-1 | Class A | 30,000 hours |
| IEC 60252-1 | Class B | 10,000 hours |
| IEC 60252-1 | Class C | 3,000 hours |
| IEC 60252-1 | Class D | 1,000 hours |
Two more differences worth knowing, both published and both invisible on the shelf:
- Low-temperature rating. Most run capacitors are rated −40°C. Supco’s run caps are rated −25°C. Not a Dallas problem, but it tells you the parts are not built to one spec.
- Failure protection class. IEC calls it P0, P1 and P2. Only a P2 or EIA-456-A part is designed to fail open. A P0 part carries no failure protection at all, and the label does not make that obvious.
- Winding geometry. Two capacitors of identical rating can be wound from wide or narrow film. Same capacitance, same current draw, very different hot-spot temperature at the end spray. This is the actual physical reason two “identical” capacitors have different field lives.
Worth being straight about: we are a parts counter, not a laboratory. We have not bench-tested endurance classes against each other. The classes above come from the published standards and from manufacturer datasheets, and we are pointing at them because almost nobody selling capacitors mentions they exist.
AC capacitor replacement: what to match before you buy
Whether you are doing an air conditioner capacitor replacement on the condenser outside or an AC unit capacitor replacement on the blower inside, the same four things have to match. Everything else on the can is marketing.
← Swipe the table sideways to see every column →
| Match this | Rule | Why |
|---|---|---|
| MFD (µF) | Exactly. Do not round to the nearest stocked value. | Oversizing raises start-winding amperage. That is a compressor killer, not a performance upgrade. On a dual, both numbers have to match — the herm side and the fan side. |
| Voltage | Same or higher. Never lower. | The voltage rating is a maximum withstand, not an operating requirement. A 440V part in a 370V circuit runs at 84% of rated and lasts longer. A 370V part in a 440V circuit is a failure waiting to happen. |
| Can size and shape | Has to fit the bracket. | Round versus oval is purely mechanical — electrically identical. But watch the height: the same 15 MFD goes from 3.25″ tall at 370V to 4.13″ at 440V. In a tight condenser that is the real reason a voltage upgrade will not fit. |
| Run vs start | Never substitute one for the other. | A run capacitor is metallized film, rated for continuous duty. A start capacitor is electrolytic and rated for a few seconds per cycle. Putting a start cap in a run position destroys it in minutes. |
When is it actually bad?
The build tolerance and the replacement threshold are two different numbers, and the internet mixes them constantly. That is why the figures look contradictory everywhere you read.
- Build tolerance is how far off it left the factory — ±5% on a Titan Pro or Supco, ±6% on a Genteq or Totaline, ±10% on an Aerovox.
- Replacement threshold is 10% low. A 45 MFD capacitor reading below about 40.5 is done. Between 6% and 10% low it is still working but visibly aging, and if the panel is already open it is cheap insurance.
- Capacitance is not the only failure mode. A bulging can, oil weeping from the seam, or a terminal that has lost continuity condemns a capacitor that still reads perfectly in tolerance. Some fail high rather than low.
Bring it in and we will test it on the counter for free before you buy anything — that goes for capacitors, contactors, motors, ignitors, relays and transformers.
