Pro tip

Read the lead colors off the nameplate before you cut anything - this motor is not a two-wire swap. Brown and black are the 208-230 V line legs, yellow/green is ground, and then there are three low-voltage leads that do the actual work: yellow is the PWM speed input, blue is control common, white is 24 V. Get white and yellow backwards and the motor sits there doing nothing while you chase a board you did not need to replace. The 200-1200 RPM range is commanded by the outdoor control, not by taps.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 6/5Typical time 45 min

  1. Shut off the breaker to the condenser and pull the disconnect. Verify dead at the contactor with a meter, not just a tester.
  2. Photograph the existing wiring and the fan blade position on the shaft before you touch anything - blade height sets the airflow.
  3. Remove the top grille screws, lift the fan deck off, and set it aside without stretching the harness.
  4. Loosen the blade set screw, pull the blade, then unbolt the old motor from the deck.
  5. Mount the new motor, reinstall the blade at the same shaft depth you photographed, and tighten the set screw on the flat.
  6. Land the leads by color per the nameplate table above, restore power, and confirm the fan ramps rather than snapping to full speed.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
