Signs You May Need a New Limit Switch
Limit switches are safety devices inside your furnace that monitor temperature. The high-limit switch shuts off burners if the heat exchanger gets too hot. The fan limit switch controls when the blower turns on and off.
Furnace Shuts Off Before Home Reaches Temperature▼
- The furnace lights and runs but shuts off after a few minutes.
- The high-limit switch may be tripping due to overheating.
- Common causes: dirty filter restricting airflow, failed blower motor, or a faulty switch.
Always check the air filter first. A clogged filter is the #1 reason a high-limit switch trips.
Blower Fan Won't Turn On or Won't Turn Off▼
- The furnace heats but the blower never starts to distribute warm air.
- Or the blower runs continuously and won't shut off after the heating cycle.
- The fan limit switch controls blower timing — when it fails, blower behavior becomes erratic.
Furnace Short-Cycles Repeatedly▼
- The furnace starts, runs for a few minutes, shuts off, then restarts.
- This continuous cycling often means the limit switch is tripping on high temperature.
- If the filter is clean and the blower is working, the limit switch itself may be faulty.
