Pro tip

Combo fan & limit controls are the older mechanical units (Honeywell L4064 family) used on standing-pilot and oil furnaces. They handle BOTH fan-on/fan-off control AND high-limit safety — different temperature setpoints for each function. The 5"/8"/11" measurement is the stem length (must match your heat exchanger / plenum geometry). If yours has been chattering or sticking, the bimetallic discs are tired — replace the whole control. Match stem length exactly.

Symptoms of failure

  • Furnace heats for a while then shuts down on its own
  • Blower keeps running hard after the burners cut out
  • Furnace will not fire at all and the board shows an open limit
  • It started after a filter was left in too long
  • Heat works, quits, then works again once things cool off
  • Rollout or high-limit keeps needing a manual reset

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

If your furnace blower won’t kick on, runs constantly, or the furnace overheats and shuts down, the fan and limit control may be the problem. This combo control turns the blower on/off by temperature and provides high-limit safety. The 11-inch element is for furnaces needing a longer plenum reach.

Specs: 11-inch element, adjustable fan differential, fixed high-limit cutoff, Honeywell L4064B series

Replaces: 5D51-78, L4064B2210

Fits: Older gas furnaces using a Honeywell L4064B fan and limit control with an 11-inch element.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 2/5Typical time 20-30 minutes

  1. Power off at the furnace switch and confirm 0V.
  2. Photograph the position, the base shape and the two wire connections.
  3. Remove the mounting screws and pull the switch out.
  4. Match the OPEN temperature exactly (the L-number), the base style and the length. A hotter limit is not an upgrade, it is a hazard.
  5. Fit the new switch in the same location and orientation.
  6. Then find out WHY it opened - a dirty filter, a blocked return, a failing blower or a closed-off duct. The switch did its job.
  7. If you replace a limit and it opens again, stop and get the airflow looked at.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
