Signs You May Need a New Furnace Pressure Switch
The pressure switch is a safety device that confirms the inducer motor is pulling proper draft before allowing gas to flow. If it fails or can't close, the furnace won't ignite.
Furnace Starts Inducer but Won't Ignite▼
- The inducer motor runs but ignition never happens.
- The pressure switch should close once draft is established — if it doesn't, the sequence stops.
- Check the rubber hose connecting the switch to the inducer housing for cracks or blockages.
Before replacing the pressure switch, check: (1) Is the drain line clogged? (2) Is the inducer hose cracked? (3) Is the flue vent blocked? These are the most common causes.
Pressure Switch Error Code on Control Board▼
- The diagnostic LED shows a code indicating "pressure switch stuck open" or "stuck closed."
- "Stuck open" means the switch never closes — check the inducer and hose first.
- "Stuck closed" means the switch is welded shut and needs replacement.
Intermittent Furnace Shutdowns▼
- Furnace lights successfully sometimes but fails on other attempts.
- A weak pressure switch may close intermittently depending on draft conditions.
- Wind gusts or a partially blocked flue can cause inconsistent pressure readings.
