Signs You May Need a New Contactor

The contactor is an electrically controlled switch inside your outdoor AC unit. It engages when the thermostat calls for cooling, sending power to the compressor and fan motor.

Outdoor Unit Won't Turn On
  • Thermostat calls for cooling but the outdoor condenser does nothing.
  • The indoor blower may still run normally.
  • A stuck-open contactor prevents power from reaching the compressor and fan.
🔄AC Won't Turn Off
  • The outdoor unit keeps running even after the thermostat is satisfied.
  • The contactor may be welded or stuck in the closed position.
  • This wastes electricity and can damage the compressor over time.

A stuck-closed contactor is a safety concern — the system runs continuously and can overheat.

🔊Chattering, Clicking, or Buzzing Noise
  • Rapid clicking or chattering sounds from the outdoor unit.
  • A buzzing noise when the AC tries to start but fails.
  • Worn or pitted contact points can't hold a solid electrical connection.
🌡Intermittent Cooling
  • AC works sometimes but not consistently.
  • The contactor may engage and disengage unpredictably.
  • Pitted contacts create resistance that causes unreliable operation.
🔥Visible Burning or Pitting on Contact Points
  • Burned, blackened, or melted contact surfaces inside the contactor.
  • Corrosion or debris preventing proper electrical contact.
  • Ant infestations inside the contactor (very common in Texas) can cause arcing and failure.
