Signs You May Need a New Inducer Motor

The inducer (draft) motor is the small fan that runs at the very beginning of the furnace heating cycle. It pulls combustion gases through the heat exchanger and out the flue.

⛔Furnace Won't Start — No Ignition Attempt▼
  • The furnace doesn't attempt to light at all when the thermostat calls for heat.
  • The inducer motor should be the first thing you hear — a quiet whirring sound.
  • If you don't hear it, the control board can't proceed to the ignition step.
🔊Loud or Unusual Noises at Startup▼
  • A loud humming, rattling, or grinding noise when the furnace starts.
  • Screeching or squealing that indicates worn bearings.
  • These sounds typically get worse over weeks and indicate imminent failure.
💨Inducer Runs but Furnace Doesn't Light▼
  • You can hear the inducer motor running but ignition never happens.
  • The pressure switch may not be closing because the inducer isn't pulling enough draft.
  • A partially failed motor may spin but not generate sufficient airflow.
🔄Furnace Short-Cycles Before Completing Heat Cycle▼
  • Furnace starts the cycle, runs briefly, then shuts down.
  • A failing inducer can cause pressure switch faults mid-cycle.
  • The control board shuts everything down as a safety measure.
