Symptoms of failure

  • Burners light for a few seconds then shut off
  • Furnace repeats the same short cycle over and over
  • Board flashes a flame-sense or flame-failure code
  • It happens more on cold mornings than warm afternoons
  • Sensor rod is coated white, orange or sooty
  • Furnace runs fine after someone cleans it, then quits again a month later

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

A thermocouple is the safety device that keeps the pilot light gas flowing on older standing-pilot furnaces and water heaters. If your pilot light won’t stay lit after you release the button, the thermocouple is almost always the problem. This is an 18-inch universal replacement that fits most brands.

Specs: 18-inch length, stainless steel, universal adapter fittings included

Replaces: TH198018

Fits: Universal — fits most gas furnaces, water heaters, and boilers with standing pilot lights including Honeywell, White Rodgers, and Robertshaw gas valves

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 1/5Typical time 10-15 minutes

  1. Power off at the furnace switch and confirm 0V.
  2. Note the bracket position and the single wire connection.
  3. Remove the one screw and slide the sensor out of the flame path.
  4. Try cleaning it first with fine steel wool or an emery cloth - never sandpaper grit that leaves residue.
  5. If cleaning fixes it and it comes back within weeks, the rod is worn out or the ground is poor.
  6. Fit the new sensor so the rod sits in the same part of the flame.
  7. A dirty flame sensor is the single most common cause of a furnace short-cycling - check this before you replace a board.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
