Before replacing, try cleaning the sensor rod with fine steel wool or a dollar bill. That fixes it about half the time. If it still shuts off after 3–5 seconds, replace it.

A thermocouple is the safety device that keeps the pilot light gas flowing on older standing-pilot furnaces and water heaters. If your pilot light won’t stay lit after you release the button, the thermocouple is almost always the problem. This is an 18-inch universal replacement that fits most brands.
