Symptoms of failure

  • AC hums but the fan and compressor will not start
  • Outdoor fan only starts if you push it with a stick
  • Compressor tries to start, clicks, then trips the breaker
  • System short-cycles or runs warm on a hot afternoon
  • The capacitor top is domed, split, or leaking oil
  • Unit worked this morning and quit in the heat of the day

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

If your compressor struggles to start or trips the breaker on startup, the start capacitor may be failing. This 216-259 MFD 330V start cap provides the extra jolt your compressor needs. Built-in bleed resistor discharges safely after each cycle.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 1/5Typical time 15-20 minutes

  1. Kill power at the disconnect and confirm 0V. A capacitor stores a lethal charge with the power off.
  2. Discharge it: bridge the terminals with an insulated-handle screwdriver, or a 20k ohm resistor, then confirm 0V with a meter.
  3. Photograph the wiring before you pull a single wire. HERM, FAN and C are not interchangeable.
  4. Loosen the mounting strap and lift the old capacitor out.
  5. Match MFD exactly. Voltage may go up (370V to 440V) but never down.
  6. Land the wires on the same terminals, strap it down, restore power.
  7. Never handle a swollen or leaking capacitor by the terminals - bring it in and we will dispose of it.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
