Signs You May Need a New Transformer

The transformer steps down your home's 120V or 240V power to the 24V that operates the thermostat, control board, and gas valve. When it fails, the low-voltage control circuit goes dead.

Thermostat Screen Is Blank
  • The thermostat has no display and doesn't respond to any buttons.
  • For hardwired thermostats, this often indicates no 24V power from the transformer.
  • Battery-powered thermostats may still show a display even if the transformer is dead.
Furnace or AC Completely Unresponsive
  • No lights on the control board, no error codes, no blower — nothing.
  • The system appears to have no power even though the breaker is on.
  • Check for a blown fuse on the control board first — a shorted thermostat wire is a common cause.

If the fuse keeps blowing after replacement, there's likely a short in the thermostat wiring. Don't just keep replacing fuses — find the short.

🔊Buzzing or Humming from the Transformer
  • An audible buzz or hum coming from inside the furnace cabinet.
  • Some hum is normal, but a loud buzz can indicate the transformer is failing.
  • A transformer that's hot to the touch is being overloaded.
