How to Clean Your AC Condenser Coils (And Why It Matters)
Your outdoor AC unit pulls air through aluminum fins to release heat from the refrigerant. Over time, those fins collect dirt, grass clippings, cottonwood fluff, and other debris that acts like a blanket — trapping heat inside the system and forcing your compressor to work overtime.
A dirty condenser coil is one of the most common reasons an AC system can’t keep up on the hottest days in Dallas. The fix takes about 30 minutes and costs almost nothing.
What You’ll Need
A garden hose with a spray nozzle, a can of coil cleaner (we stock Nu-Calgon and other brands), and about 30 minutes. That’s it. You don’t need a pressure washer — in fact, high pressure can bend the fins and make things worse.
Step-by-Step
Turn off the power. Flip the disconnect box next to the outdoor unit or shut off the breaker. Never spray water on an energized unit.
Remove debris. Clear any leaves, grass, or objects within 2 feet of the unit. If the top grille comes off easily (usually a few screws), remove it to clean from the inside out.
Apply coil cleaner. Spray the coil cleaner on the fins according to the label directions. Most foaming cleaners need 5-10 minutes to work. The foam lifts dirt out of the fins as it expands.
Rinse from inside out. Using your garden hose at moderate pressure, rinse through the fins from the inside of the unit outward. This pushes dirt out the same direction it came in. Work your way around all four sides.
Let it dry and restore power. Give it 15-20 minutes to dry, then turn the power back on. You should notice better cooling performance within an hour.
How Often Should You Clean?
At minimum, once a year before summer. If you have pets, cottonwood trees, or a dusty yard, twice a year is better. In Dallas, the cottonwood season in spring and the dust in late summer can clog coils fast.
