A galvanized metal wye fitting (8″ x 6″ x 6″) that splits a 8″ duct into two smaller 6″ branches. Used when you need to reduce and split a trunk line into two supply runs. Standard residential HVAC ductwork fitting.

How is a wye sized?

Main first, then the two branches. A 9-7-7 wye takes a 9 inch run in and splits it into two 7 inch branches.

Can I split a run into two the same size as the main?

You will see wyes like 12-12-12 and 10-10-10, and they have their uses, but understand what happens: two branches the same size as the main cannot both carry full flow. Air divides by the path of least resistance, so the shorter or straighter branch takes most of it.

Wye or tee?

A wye splits at an angle so the air keeps moving in roughly the direction it was already going. A tee turns it ninety degrees and costs far more pressure. Use a wye wherever you have the room.

How do I balance the two branches?

Put a damper in each branch just past the wye. Trying to balance at the registers instead is how you end up with whistling vents and a room that still runs hot.
