My X13 motor doesn't run — is it dead?

Test the board first. X13 motors need a 24V signal on one of 5 control pins (each pin = a different speed tap) plus steady 120/240V bus voltage. A dead board sends no signal, and the motor sits idle even though it's healthy. Pull the connector, jumper R to one of the speed pins, and see if the motor runs.

Can I replace a PSC motor with an X13?

Not as a drop-in. X13 motors need a control board that speaks the 24V tap-select language. Most 80%+ AFUE furnaces from 2010+ have this; older PSC-only boards don't. Confirm board compatibility before buying.

How do I pick the right X13 HP?

General rule: 0.5 HP per ton of cooling (so a 3-ton system uses a 1/2-3/4 HP motor; 4-ton uses 3/4-1 HP). For furnace-only applications, match the original motor HP. Bring the old motor in — we'll match HP and frame at the counter.

Is X13 worth the upgrade over PSC?

For airflow consistency, yes — X13 maintains constant torque across static pressure changes, so dirty filters don't kill your CFM. For efficiency, marginal — true variable-speed ECM (5860-style) is more efficient. X13 sits in the middle.
