What meter do I actually need for HVAC?

A true-RMS multimeter that reads AC and DC volts, resistance, microamps and capacitance covers most of the work. Microamps matters for flame sensors, and capacitance means you can test a run capacitor instead of guessing at it.

Why true RMS?

An averaging meter reads wrong on the distorted waveforms that ECM motors and variable-speed equipment produce. True RMS reads them correctly. On modern equipment it is not optional.

Can I test a capacitor with a regular meter?

Only if it has a capacitance range, and only after the capacitor is fully discharged. If yours does not, bring the capacitor to us - we bench-test them free at the counter.

What is a clamp meter for?

Reading current without breaking the circuit. You clamp around one conductor to check what a compressor or blower is actually drawing against its nameplate rating. It is the fastest way to tell a struggling motor from a healthy one.

What CAT rating do I need?

CAT III is the sensible minimum for HVAC. It is the meter's ability to survive a voltage transient without becoming a hazard in your hand. Cheap unrated meters are the ones that fail dangerously.
