My furnace locks out on the pressure switch. Is the inducer bad?
Sometimes, but check the cheap stuff first, because pressure switches themselves rarely fail. What we see far more often is a cracked or gummed up hose to the switch, a plugged pressure tap in the inducer housing, a blocked flue or a nest at the termination, and on 90 percent furnaces a clogged condensate trap holding water in the secondary heat exchanger. Every one of those looks exactly like a dead inducer from the thermostat.
How do I confirm the inducer is actually the problem?
It hums and will not spin, it spins but sounds like gravel, it slows under load, or it runs and still cannot pull the rated draft on a manometer at the switch port. Pull the wheel and look at it, because cracked and unbalanced wheels are common. A shaft you can wobble by hand means the bearings are done.
Do I need the whole assembly or just the motor?
Buy the assembly when you can. Housing, wheel and motor are a matched set, the wheel is pressed or keyed to a specific shaft, and a wheel that is slightly off will not develop the draft the switch is looking for. Bring the old assembly in along with the furnace model and serial number, because inducers are not universal.
What about the gasket?
Replace it. The inducer to heat exchanger gasket is a combustion seal, not a nice-to-have. A leaking one lets flue gas into the cabinet and drops your draft below the switch setpoint. Most assemblies come with one and we stock them separately.
