Pro tip

Kill power at the breaker and the furnace service switch first. Then, before you spend money on a motor, pull the hose off the pressure switch and blow through it, and check the drain trap on any 90 percent furnace. On the inducer calls we hear about, a plugged tap or brittle hose and a full condensate trap show up more often than a dead motor does. If you do need the part, bring the old assembly plus the furnace model and serial.

Symptoms of failure

  • Furnace locks out on pressure switch and will not light
  • Inducer does not spin at all on a heat call
  • Loud rattle, grinding or a bearing whine at start-up
  • Wheel turns but the draft is too weak to close the pressure switch
  • Inducer runs continuously and will not shut off
  • Visible rust-through or a cracked housing at the outlet

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 3/5Typical time 45-60 minutes

  1. Shut off gas and power at the furnace and confirm 0V.
  2. Photograph the wiring, the pressure switch hose routing and the outlet orientation before anything comes off.
  3. Disconnect the pressure switch hose and the motor leads, then unbolt the inducer from the collector box.
  4. Scrape the old gasket off the collector box face completely - a reused or torn gasket is the number one callback on this job.
  5. Fit the new inducer with a fresh gasket in the same outlet orientation you photographed, and snug the bolts evenly.
  6. Reconnect the hose and leads, restore gas and power, and watch a full ignition cycle to confirm the pressure switch makes and holds.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
