Thermostat wire connects your thermostat to the furnace, air handler, and outdoor unit. 18/8 (18-gauge, 8-conductor) gives you enough wires for multi-stage heating/cooling, heat pump systems, or setups with accessories like humidifiers and dehumidifiers. If you’re running new wire, the extra conductors give you room for future upgrades.

Will this thermostat work with my system?
Match the system type first - conventional gas/electric, heat pump with auxiliary heat, or multi-stage. A stat wired for a conventional furnace will not run a heat pump's reversing valve correctly, and that is the mistake that costs people a comfortable winter.
Do I need a C wire?
Most digital and all smart thermostats do - the C (common) wire is what powers the stat continuously. Mechanical and battery-powered stats do not. If you have no C wire at the stat, your options are running one, using an adaptor at the air handler, or choosing a battery stat.
What do the letters mean?
R is power, W is heat, Y is cooling, G is the fan, C is common. On a heat pump, O or B runs the reversing valve and there is usually an auxiliary or emergency heat terminal. Photograph the old wiring before you pull a single wire.
Why would I want a locking cover?
Rentals, offices, churches, waiting rooms - anywhere the setpoint gets moved by whoever walks past. A clear cover lets people read it without changing it; a solid metal one hides it entirely.
Is a mechanical thermostat still a reasonable choice?
For a simple system with no scheduling needs, yes. No batteries, nothing to fail in software, and nothing to get confused about. They run a wider temperature swing than a digital stat, which some people prefer and some do not.
