Pro tip

Bring the old filter in, or a photo of the printed frame - the size on the frame is the number to buy by, not what your tape measure reads. And check the arrow before you slide the new one in: about a third of the restricted-airflow calls we hear about turn out to be a filter installed backwards or a 4 inch filter crammed into a 1 inch rack.

Symptoms of failure

  • Weak airflow at every vent in the house
  • System runs longer and longer to hit the setpoint
  • Evaporator coil icing up in cooling season
  • Furnace short-cycling on the high limit
  • Dust settling again within days of cleaning
  • Whistling or a sucking sound at the filter cabinet door
  • You cannot remember the last time it was changed

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

Trane Perfect Fit 5-inch replacement media filter for the 17-1/2 in. furnace filter cabinet. Resideo spec sheet 68-3070-02 lists TRN1727T1 as the manufacturer-published replacement for BAYFTFR17M, at 17-1/2 x 27 x 5 nominal. Trane publishes no MERV rating for the original OEM BAYFT filter, so only the TRN replacement rating is shown.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 1/5Typical time 5 minutes

  1. Turn the system off at the thermostat before you open the cabinet.
  2. Open the filter cabinet door and slide the old media out. Note the AIRFLOW ARROW - it points toward the blower, away from the return.
  3. Check the part number on the old frame against the new one. The BAYFT filters are sized to the cabinet, not to a nominal duct size, so a close guess will not seal.
  4. Slide the new media in with the arrow pointing the same direction, seated fully against the back of the track.
  5. Close the door and make sure it latches. An unlatched filter door lets the blower pull unfiltered attic air straight past the media.
  6. A 5-inch media filter runs 6-12 months in Dallas. Write the date on the frame edge with a marker so the next guy knows.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
