Signs You May Need a New Heat Sequencer

Heat sequencers are used in electric furnaces and heat pump air handlers to stage heating elements on in sequence rather than all at once, preventing a massive electrical surge.

🌡Some Heating Elements Work but Others Don't
  • The system heats but not to the set temperature — some stages aren't engaging.
  • You can visually inspect the elements through the access panel — only some glow orange.
  • A failed sequencer won't energize its associated heating element.
All Heat Strips Come On at Once
  • A stuck-closed sequencer sends power to all elements simultaneously.
  • This draws a massive amount of current and can trip the breaker.
  • You may notice lights dimming throughout the house when the heat turns on.
No Heat at All from Electric Furnace
  • The blower runs but the air isn't warm.
  • If all sequencers have failed open, no heating elements receive power.
  • Check for a blown fuse on the circuit board as well.
