Preparing Your Furnace for Fall: A Dallas Homeowner’s Checklist
Dallas summers get all the attention when it comes to HVAC, but fall sneaks up fast — and the first cold front always catches a few people off guard. If your furnace has been sitting idle since March, a little prep work now can save you from a no-heat emergency on the first 40-degree morning. Here’s what to check before you flip the thermostat to heat mode.
Replace Your Air Filter
This is the single most important thing you can do. A dirty filter restricts airflow, makes your blower motor work harder, and can even cause your furnace to overheat and shut down on the high limit switch. If you ran your AC all summer on the same filter, it’s definitely due for a change. For most systems, a standard 1-inch filter should be swapped every 30 to 60 days during heavy use. If you have a 4-inch media filter, every 3 to 6 months is typical. Either way, start the heating season with a fresh one.
Inspect the Flame Sensor
The flame sensor is a small metal rod that sits in the burner flame and tells the control board that gas is actually burning. Over time, it develops a layer of oxidation that insulates it from the flame, causing the furnace to light briefly and then shut off — usually within 5 to 10 seconds. Cleaning it with fine steel wool or emery cloth takes about two minutes and solves one of the most common furnace problems. If cleaning doesn’t help, a new flame sensor is inexpensive and easy to swap.
Check the Ignitor
Most modern furnaces use a hot surface ignitor — a small silicon carbide or silicon nitride element that glows red-hot to light the gas. These are fragile and wear out over time. If your ignitor has visible cracks, discoloration, or if the furnace clicks but never lights, the ignitor is likely the issue. They’re specific to your furnace model, so bring the old one in or have your model number ready and we’ll match it for you.
Listen for Unusual Noises
When you first turn on the furnace, pay attention to what you hear. A loud bang when the burners light could mean delayed ignition from dirty burners — that’s worth addressing before it cracks your heat exchanger. A high-pitched squeal usually points to a blower motor bearing going out. Rattling or vibrating sounds might be loose panels, ductwork, or a blower wheel that’s come loose on the motor shaft. New noises are your furnace telling you something needs attention.
Test Your Thermostat
Switch your thermostat to heat mode and set it a few degrees above room temperature. The furnace should kick on within a minute or two. If nothing happens, check that the thermostat is set correctly, the batteries are fresh (if applicable), and the breaker for the furnace is on. Also make sure the furnace door panel is fully closed — most furnaces have a safety switch that prevents operation if the panel is even slightly ajar.
Inspect Your Exhaust Venting
For high-efficiency furnaces with PVC exhaust pipes, make sure the outdoor termination point isn’t blocked by debris, wasp nests, or plants that grew over the summer. For standard efficiency furnaces with metal flue pipes, check that connections are secure and there are no visible gaps or corrosion. Blocked or leaking exhaust venting is both a performance issue and a safety concern.
