How do I know if my blower motor is bad?

Pull the blower, spin the shaft by hand — should turn freely with no grinding or wobble. Check resistance between motor leads (varies by HP, typically 1-10 ohms across main winding). Open winding or shorted = bad. But first: test the run cap. A weak cap mimics every blower motor symptom.

A little — 1/4 HP replacing a 1/6 HP is fine if the application allows the extra airflow. Going DOWN burns out the motor. Always match voltage exactly (120V motor stays in 120V; 240V stays in 240V).

How long should a blower motor last?

8-12 years on average in Dallas. Texas dust + summer cycling shortens that. The cap usually fails first; if you replace the cap on schedule (every 5-7 years), the motor lasts longer.

What's the difference between PSC and ECM?

PSC = permanent split capacitor, the classic single-speed-with-tap motor. ECM = electronically commutated, variable-speed and 30%+ more efficient. You can replace PSC with PSC, but you generally CAN'T replace PSC with ECM without a new control board too. Different worlds.

Symptoms of failure

No air at the vents but the outdoor unit is running
Blower hums but the wheel will not turn
Squealing or rumbling from the indoor unit
Airflow is weak on every register in the house
Blower runs for a few minutes then cuts out on the limit
Burning smell from the air handler or furnace closet

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

If your indoor unit runs but produces weak or no airflow, the blower motor may need replacement. This 1/2 HP motor is commonly used in air handlers running on 208-230V. If the blower won’t start, runs on only one speed, or overheats and shuts off, this motor is likely the fix.

Installing it yourself

Kill power at the furnace or air handler switch and at the breaker. Confirm 0V.
Photograph every wire and the exact depth of the wheel on the shaft before anything comes out.
Slide the blower assembly out. It is heavier than it looks - support it.
Loosen the set screw and pull the wheel. A wheel puller saves a lot of swearing.
Match HP, voltage, speed count, rotation and frame. PSC and ECM X13 are not interchangeable.
Set the wheel to the same depth on the new shaft and tighten the set screw on the flat.
Reinstall, reconnect by wire color, restore power and check for vibration.
If it is an ECM, the module and the harness are part of the job - bring the old one so we can match it.
