Pro tip

This listing is the repair, not just the thermistor. The inrush limiter is the round black disc on an ECM control module that takes the surge every time the motor powers up, and it is the component that most often fails open and leaves you with a motor that hums but never starts. Swapping the disc is a $5 part and a soldering job; a new control module is several hundred. Bring us the module and we do the swap. If you would rather do it yourself, verify the disc is open with a meter before you order - a shorted module or a burned trace will not be fixed by a new limiter.

Symptoms of failure

  • Blower motor hums but never starts
  • Motor tries to start, then the module goes dead until you cycle power
  • No LED activity at all on the control module
  • A round black disc on the module board is cracked or burned
  • Motor works when cold, quits after the system has been running
  • Module reads open across the inrush limiter with a meter

Seeing these does not always mean this part is the culprit. Bring the old one in and we will meter it at the counter, free, before you buy.

ECM motor repair kit. No manufacturer-published literature was found for this part number, so its contents, compatible motor families and electrical ratings are not stated here. Confirm the kit matches your ECM motor and control module before ordering.

Installing it yourself

Difficulty 4/5Typical time 60-90 minutes

  1. Kill power and confirm 0V. Let the module sit five minutes - the bus capacitors hold a dangerous charge after the power is off.
  2. Pull the control module off the motor end bell and open the potting shell.
  3. Meter across the inrush limiter. Open means it failed; a reading near 1 ohm means the limiter is fine and the fault is elsewhere.
  4. Desolder the failed disc, clean the pads, and check the surrounding traces for heat damage before fitting the new one.
  5. Solder the replacement in with the leads at the original spacing so the body cannot touch adjacent components.
  6. Reassemble, refit to the motor, and run a full cycle. If you would rather not solder, bring us the module and we do the swap on the bench.

Power off at the disconnect first, every time. Not sure partway through? Bring it to the counter and we will walk it with you.
