Never hang flex duct on a narrow strap or a wire - it necks the duct down at every hanger and you lose airflow you will never see from the ground. Use a wide saddle, keep supports about four to five feet apart, and pull the run reasonably taut rather than laying it in S-curves.

Duct saddles support round flex duct to prevent sagging, kinking, and airflow restrictions. If your flex duct is drooping between joists in the attic, saddles hold it in a smooth curve so air flows freely. This 20″ galvanized steel saddle wraps around the duct and mounts to framing or strapping.

What does a duct saddle do?
It supports flex duct across a span without pinching it. The wide curved surface spreads the load so the duct keeps its round shape and its full inside diameter.
Why not just use a strap or a wire?
A narrow strap or a wire cuts into flex duct and necks it down. A duct that is choked at every hanger has a fraction of the airflow it should, and you cannot see it from the ground. Codes call for a minimum hanger width for exactly this reason.
How far apart should the supports go?
Close enough that the duct does not sag more than about half an inch per foot of span between them. Four to five feet is typical for flex.
Does sag matter that much?
Yes. Every dip in a flex run is a pressure loss, and a run laid in loose S-curves across an attic can lose a startling share of the air it should deliver. Pull it reasonably taut and support it properly.
