FDC07 – DUCT COUPLING
Two bands per joint - one on the inner core and one on the outer jacket - and seal the core with mastic before you pull the insulation back over. Cloth duct tape on a flex joint is a repeat visit; in a Dallas attic it lets go in a couple of summers.

A duct coupling (also called a duct connector or splice) joins two pieces of flexible duct together end-to-end, or connects flex duct to a metal duct collar. This 7-inch galvanized steel coupling slips inside the duct and is secured with duct tape and a clamp.

What size flex duct coupling do I need?
Match the duct diameter. A 6 inch coupling joins two 6 inch flex runs. Buy by the duct size, not by the outside of the insulation jacket - the number refers to the inner core.
How do I make the joint?
Pull the insulation and outer jacket back, slide the inner core over the coupling, and band the core to the coupling with a nylon draw band or a metal strap. Seal it with mastic. Then pull the insulation and jacket back over and band that separately. Two bands per joint, not one.
Is duct tape good enough?
No. Cloth duct tape dries out and lets go, usually within a couple of Dallas summers, and then you are conditioning the attic. Mastic or a UL 181 foil tape is what holds.
Can I just tape two flex runs together?
You can, and it will leak. A coupling gives the band something rigid to clamp against, which is the whole point.
