BOOT121212 – UNINSULATED BOOT
Sizing runs box dimension first, then the duct opening - a 12x6-7 is a 12 by 6 grille size with a 7 inch duct hole. Match that hole to the duct actually feeding it rather than necking a run down to make a boot fit; that is where the noise and the hot room come from. Everything but the square boxes is internally insulated, so it is already right for an attic or crawl space.

A register boot connects your round ductwork to a rectangular register opening. This uninsulated version is used where condensation is not a concern — like in unconditioned spaces, garages, or commercial setups. The 12×12 is a large-format boot for high-airflow applications.

How are register boots sized?
Box dimension first, then the duct opening. The first two numbers are the grille size in inches - width by height - and the third is the round duct hole. A boot listed 12x6-7 has a 12 by 6 grille size and a 7 inch duct hole on top.
Which number is width and which is height?
Width first, then height, the same convention as the register itself. Getting them backwards is the usual reason a boot comes back.
What size duct hole do I need?
Match the duct run feeding it. Do not neck an 8 inch run down to a smaller boot collar to make it fit - you get noise at the register and lose air in that room.
Are these insulated?
All of our register boots are INTERNALLY insulated - the insulation is inside the boot rather than wrapped around the outside, so the sheet metal does not sweat where the boot sits in an attic or a crawl space. In Dallas that covers most installs. The square boxes - 10x10x10, 12x12x12 and 14x14x14 - are uninsulated and are meant for use inside conditioned space.
What is a no-hole boot for?
It comes with no duct opening cut, so you cut the collar in wherever the run actually approaches - side, end or top. Useful in tight framing where a factory hole would land in the wrong place. You add your own collar.
What is a return air box?
A larger box that sits behind a return grille, usually with a duct board top, giving the return duct somewhere to land and the grille something to screw to. Sized to the return grille it serves.
