A plenum is the sheet metal box that connects your air handler or cased coil to the ductwork in your home. If you’re replacing an air handler or adding ductwork, you’ll need one that matches your unit’s opening size. This one measures 25″ x 22″ at the opening and is 36″ long.

What size plenum do I need?

It has to match the equipment it bolts to and the space it lives in. The three numbers are width, depth and height in inches. Measure the furnace or air handler opening first, then the clearance you have.

What does R6 mean?

The R-value of the insulation. R6 is the common insulated plenum board rating - the higher the number, the more it resists heat transfer. Insulation on a plenum matters most in an attic or garage where the surrounding air is nowhere near room temperature.

Supply or return plenum?

The supply plenum sits on the discharge side and feeds the trunk lines. The return plenum is on the intake side, usually with the filter in or near it. They are built the same way but sized to different openings.

Why is my plenum sweating?

Warm humid air hitting a cold metal surface. That is what the insulation is for - an uninsulated or poorly sealed plenum in a Dallas attic will drip and eventually stain the ceiling below.
