Signs You May Need a New Blower Motor

The blower motor is inside your indoor air handler or furnace. It pushes conditioned air through your ductwork. When it fails, you'll lose airflow even though the system may still run.

💨Weak or No Airflow from Vents
  • Little or no air comes out of your vents even though the system is running.
  • Some rooms may have weak airflow while the AC or furnace appears to be working.
  • Check your air filter first — a clogged filter can mimic a bad blower motor.
🔊Loud Squealing, Screeching, or Rattling
  • High-pitched squealing or screeching from the indoor unit on startup.
  • Rattling sounds that indicate a loose blower wheel or worn bearings.
  • These sounds typically get worse over time and won't resolve on their own.
Blower Runs Intermittently or Not at All
  • The blower starts and stops randomly.
  • The motor may run for a few minutes then shut off on thermal overload.
  • A failing motor overheats and trips its internal safety switch.
🔥Burning Smell from Vents or Air Handler
  • An electrical or hot-metal smell coming from the furnace or air handler area.
  • This indicates the motor windings are overheating or have shorted.
  • Turn off the system immediately if you smell burning — this is a safety concern.
💰Higher-Than-Normal Electric Bills
  • A failing blower motor draws more current as its bearings wear.
  • The system runs longer because airflow is reduced.
  • If your electric bill spiked and the filter is clean, the blower motor may be the cause.
