Signs You May Need a New Thermostat
The thermostat is the main control point for your HVAC system. When it malfunctions, it can cause no heat, no cooling, short cycling, or uneven temperatures.
Temperature Reading Doesn't Match the Room▼
- The thermostat display shows 72°F but the room feels noticeably warmer or cooler.
- The temperature sensor inside the thermostat may be faulty.
- A thermostat in direct sunlight or near a vent will read incorrectly.
HVAC System Won't Turn On or Off▼
- The system doesn't respond when you adjust the temperature.
- The system runs continuously and won't cycle off.
- Check batteries first — dead batteries are the most common thermostat "failure."
Replace thermostat batteries once a year, even if the display still works. Weak batteries can cause erratic behavior.
Short Cycling — System Turns On and Off Rapidly▼
- Heating or cooling cycles last only a few minutes before shutting off.
- The thermostat may be cycling the system too frequently.
- This can also be caused by a thermostat on a poorly insulated exterior wall.
Blank Display or Unresponsive Buttons▼
- The screen is completely blank or partially lit.
- Buttons don't respond when pressed.
- For wired thermostats, this may indicate a blown fuse at the furnace rather than the thermostat itself.
