Signs You May Need a New Furnace Ignitor

The hot surface ignitor (HSI) is the glowing element that lights the gas in your furnace. They're fragile and wear out over time — cracking from thermal stress or burning out after years of use.

Furnace Won't Light — No Ignition at All
  • The inducer motor runs but you never see or hear ignition.
  • The ignitor should glow bright orange — if it doesn't glow, it's failed.
  • A cracked ignitor element is the most common cause.

Ignitors are fragile ceramic. Never touch the element with bare fingers — oils from your skin can cause premature failure.

🔥Ignitor Glows but Furnace Doesn't Light
  • The ignitor turns orange but the burners never ignite.
  • This may indicate a gas valve issue rather than the ignitor itself.
  • However, a weak ignitor that doesn't reach full temperature can also fail to light the gas.
🔄Furnace Takes Multiple Attempts to Light
  • The furnace cycles through 2–3 ignition attempts before finally lighting.
  • Each attempt takes longer than normal.
  • This indicates the ignitor is weakening and should be replaced before it fails completely.
👁Visible Cracks in the Ignitor Element
  • A hairline crack in the ceramic or silicon carbide element.
  • White or gray discoloration at the tip where it contacts flame.
  • Any visible damage means the ignitor should be replaced — it can fail at any time.
