Signs You May Need a New Gas Valve

The gas valve controls the flow of natural gas to your furnace burners. It opens when the control board signals that all safety checks have passed.

Furnace Completes Startup but No Flame Appears
  • The inducer runs, pressure switch closes, ignitor glows — but no gas flows to the burners.
  • The valve solenoid may have failed, preventing it from opening.
  • Verify the gas supply is on and other gas appliances in the home still work.

Gas valves are more expensive to replace. Always rule out the ignitor, flame sensor, and control board first — they're cheaper and fail more often.

🔊Clicking Sound but No Ignition
  • You hear a click (the valve attempting to open) but gas doesn't flow.
  • A weak or stuck solenoid may not fully open the valve.
  • This can also be caused by a bad control board not sending enough voltage.
🔄Furnace Heats Intermittently
  • Gas flow is inconsistent — the furnace works sometimes and not others.
  • The valve may be sticking or have internal debris.
  • Inconsistent gas flow can also cause uneven flame patterns at the burners.
