HKTSD15XB – HEAT KIT (15KW)
ICP / Carrier / Heil / Tempstar HKTSD and HKSC heat kits fit ICP-platform air handlers. **Match kW to tonnage:** 10 kW for 1.5 / 2 / 2.5 ton; 15 kW for 3 / 3.5 / 4 ton; 20 kW for 5 ton. Match the part number suffix carefully -- different suffixes indicate different breaker / circuit configurations even at the same kW rating. Disconnect main power before installing; some HKTSD kits have factory pigtail wiring that connects to specific pin colors on the air handler control board.

Electric heat kits (also called heat strips) add supplemental or emergency heating to your air handler or heat pump system. If your heat pump can’t keep up in cold weather, or you need backup heat when the heat pump is in defrost mode, a 15 kW heat kit provides that extra warmth.
Specs: 15 kW, nickel chromium elements, built-in circuit breaker, 208/240V
Replaces: HKTSD15XB
Fits: Goodman and Amana air handlers. Check your model for compatibility.

- Common applications: ICP FEM4, FEM5, NEAM4, NEAM5 air handlers
How do I size a heat kit for my air handler?
Match the kW rating to your air handler's tonnage: - 10 kW -- fits 1.5, 2, or 2.5 ton air handlers - 15 kW -- fits 3, 3.5, or 4 ton air handlers - 20 kW -- fits 5 ton air handlers
Can I add electric heat to my heat pump system?
Yes -- heat pumps almost always use electric strips as backup ("auxiliary heat" or "emergency heat"). The thermostat energizes the strips when outdoor temps drop below balance point (typically 35-40 degrees F in DFW). Match the heat kit to your air handler model.
What does the suffix on the part number mean?
The suffix typically indicates breaker configuration: - BRK = factory breaker included - BR = breakerless (you provide the disconnect) - Other suffixes = circuit count, voltage taps, or thermostat compatibility
How long does an electric heat kit last?
20+ years typical for the kit itself; individual heating elements (sheath heaters) may fail in 8-15 years from cycling. Most kits have replaceable elements -- you don't have to replace the whole kit for one bad strip.
Why is my heat kit tripping the high-limit?
Restricted airflow is the #1 cause: clogged filter, dirty blower wheel, undersized return, closed-off supplies. The strips overheat when air doesn't move across them fast enough. Diagnose airflow before condemning the heat kit or limit switch.
