Why Not Just Order One Online?
You can. Amazon, SupplyHouse, and Home Depot all sell capacitors. But here’s the problem: if you order the wrong value, the wrong voltage, or the wrong shape, your AC still won’t work — and now you’re waiting another 2–3 days for the right one. In July in Dallas, that’s not an option.
When you walk into our store with your old capacitor (or just the numbers off it), we:
- Test it on the spot — we’ll confirm it’s actually bad before you replace it
- Match the exact replacement — by MFD, voltage, and physical size
- Explain the swap — if you’ve never changed a capacitor, we’ll walk you through it
That’s something Amazon can’t do.
How Much Does an AC Capacitor Cost?
At our store, most run capacitors cost $10–$38 depending on the MFD value and whether you want American-made (Titan HD) or an imported option. Dual run capacitors — the most common type in residential AC systems — are typically $15–$38.
For comparison, an HVAC service call to replace a capacitor usually runs $150–$350. The part itself is the cheap part. The labor is what gets expensive.

How Do I Know Which Capacitor I Need?
Every capacitor has three numbers printed on it that matter:
- MFD (microfarads) — the capacitance value. A dual run capacitor shows two numbers like 45/5, meaning 45 MFD for the compressor and 5 MFD for the fan motor.
- Voltage — either 370V or 440V. A 440V capacitor can replace a 370V one (not the other way around).
- Shape — round or oval. Electrically identical if the MFD and voltage match. Round is more common.
If you can read those three numbers off your old capacitor, you can walk in and we’ll have the replacement ready in 30 seconds. If you can’t read them, bring the old one in — we’ll figure it out.

Signs Your AC Capacitor Is Bad
Not sure if the capacitor is actually the problem? Here are the most common signs:
- AC hums but won’t start — the compressor is trying to kick on but can’t
- AC runs but doesn’t cool — the fan spins but the compressor isn’t engaging
- AC shuts off randomly — a weak capacitor can cause intermittent failures
- The capacitor is visibly swollen, leaking, or bulging at the top

What If It’s Not the Capacitor?
The capacitor is the most common AC failure, but it’s not the only one. If your capacitor tests good, the next things to check are:
- Contactor — the electrical switch that sends power to the compressor ($18–$35)
- Condenser fan motor — if the fan isn’t spinning at all ($120–$180)
- Hard start kit — helps an aging compressor start under load ($25–$40)
Bring the questionable part in. We test capacitors, contactors, motors, and relays at the counter — for free. We’d rather test it and tell you it’s fine than sell you something you don’t need.
